I don’t know about you but some of my best friends are serial daters. Like just broke up with the love of their life, will start seeing someone a few weeks later kind of daters. The kind that go on a first date every night of the week, even if they could use a little more sleep or time to work out and hang out with friends. And as much as I love them, I just don’t get it.
Being single is awesome. Not because sleeping alone or dealing with happy couples all the time is fun but because there’s no one you need to take into consideration daily but you. Where do you want to go for dinner? Who do you feel like spending time with? What’s best for you right now?
Maybe I’m crazy but I think there really is something to taking time to just is with yourself, especially between relationships. You need time to figure out what makes you happy sans someone else and truly drives you before adding someone else into the equation again.
While I too love being loved and would rather not die alone, whenever it becomes clear that isn’t where I se my path going I end it. Because life’s too short to waste time on people who aren’t a good fit, no matter how much you care about them.
And if it wasn’t for that I probably wouldn’t be here today, writing to you from this dream job in Australia. In the past two years I’ve learned more about myself and the world than I ever thought possible. Found a career I’m passionate about. Friends who love me exactly as I am. Am taking better care of my mind and body than ever before, and am more confident in who I am and what I want than ever before.
Of course when the right thing comes along, I’ll be happy. Not because I’ll no longer be free to do as I wish, but because the right person will encourage me to pursue those things regardless. And because at this point I’ve had enough time on my own to come to the important decisions I’ve needed to.
My capstone professor constantly reminded us that who you choose as a mate is the most important decision you’ll ever make. So take your time, choose wisely, and if you find you got it wrong the first time, try again.
If you disagree then by all means, leave it in the comments, but to all my serial daters out there: don’t knock it till you try it.
Xoxo
P.S. – I did actually meet someone down here who broke that streak, but he’s great and totally worth it and if it wasn’t for that time I wouldn’t be here anyway so.
