6 Drives to See Before You Die

I love road trips. To me, they are the epitome of adventure. Pack me in a car with friends any day and let’s go. The world is vast and you have to start somewhere.

The summer we graduated high school, my friends and I did a road trip from San Diego to San Francisco. Little did we know it would become an annual tradition to keep us together as the world tried to tear us apart. The next year we went from LA to Vancouver, the year after a lap all over the west, and then from Chicago to Austin and back.

And time and time again, the things that made the trip most special were the unexpected ones. Like hearing the stories from the locals and making friends in the most unlikely of places.

Anyway since I love a good drive, here are a few I think you need to see before you die.

6. The Great Ocean Road (Victoria, Australia)
One of the more recent discoveries for me, if you ever find yourself down around Melbourne it’s a must. It’s like a Pacific Coast Highway junior as far as the ocean-side driving is concerned, but the opportunity to see wild koalas and explore the rainforest really kicks it up a notch.

5. The German Countryside (Germany)
With so many stunning landscapes throughout Germany it’s hard to know where to start. This summer for instance we did the Ahr to Cochem and were absolutely blown away. So just pick a route and go. The mountains are calling.

4. From Sonoma to Mendocino (California, USA)
This drive completely caught me off guard. One Saturday I was headed up to Mendocino for an event, and the sheer diversity of this drive took my breath away. Beginning in the hills of Sonoma, it took me up through the mountains to a sunlight-filled valley of vineyards, and then through a redwood forest before dropping me right on ocean cliffs. It was spectacular, and listening to the likes of Frank Sinatra while driving I’ll never forget it.

3. Iceland in General (Southeast Iceland)
I’ve written about this before, but seriously renting a campervan and hitting the open roads in Iceland was one of the best experiences of my life. Where else can you get sweeping landscapes and roads flanked by miniature ponies on both sides?

2. The Ring of Kerry (Ireland)
Technically we didn’t even do the proper ring; we cut from the Black Valley into the Gap of Dunloe, but it was beyond amazing. A tight, winding one lane road through the Irish countryside, words and pictures could never do it justice. I didn’t just fall madly in love with Ireland that day but with the earth itself. If you’re ever even remotely close, you have to go.

1. Pacific Coast Highway (California, USA)
Cliché, I know, but growing up in California nothing beats it. Coastal views and nothing but breathtaking seascapes for miles, you just have to see it. With friends, good music and the windows rolled down for effect.

If your favorite drive isn’t on here let me know in the comments! The more roads to venture the better.
