The more I see of Sonoma County the more I fall in love. Working for Bottle Barn I’ve had the privilege of exploring more than I ever had before, and both the wines I taste and people I meet are outstanding. More surprisingly however has been the breathtaking landscapes.
Sonoma County itself is pretty vast, but this story focuses on northern Sonoma County. While I have no doubt there are stunning views to the south, I’ve done more exploring to the north where you’re a little more out of town and it’s a little more wild. And trust me, it deserves a shout-out.
1. Notre Vue Estate / Balverne
These guys win everything. I came here to interview the head winemaker for Bottle Barn and after they insisted on showing us around the property. And by show us around, they meant climbing in a 4×4 and driving to the top of a nearby hill with a fresh bottle of Pinot Noir. With hundreds of acres of vines, hills and wild forest, club members have their choice of killer picnic spots. It’s worth checking out.
2. MacRostie Winery & Vineyards
Another favorite, MacRostie’s tasting room that opened in 2015 sits perfectly atop a small knoll, and it’s gorgeous open concept means that no matter where you sit, the views (and wines) are amazing. If you’re at all into Sonoma County Chardonnay and Pinot, this is the spot for you.
3. Silver Oak Alexander Valley
A must-see in Sonoma County. Having just opened in April, not only are the tasting room and winery stunning structures but the location itself is breathtaking. Tucked at the base of a small mountain, vineyards extend all around you and the open concept makes you feel downright blissful no matter where you sit. Not to mention it’s crazy eco-friendly.
4. Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery
Do you know where Dry Creek Valley is? If not you’re missing out. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the 101, it’s like stepping back in time to early wine country. The vista from the front of the tasting room is to die for. Just remember there won’t be service when you get there, so friends will have to wait to see how great it looks on your stories.
